Dystopian Tour - Take 10 with author of The Breeders & The Believers, Katie French plus $50 Amazon GC / Book Giveaway

The Breeders
YA Dystopian

Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world's last free girls. When Riley was born, her mother escaped the Breeders, the group of doctors using cruel experiments to bolster the dwindling human race. Her parents do everything possible to keep her from their clutches-- moving from one desolate farm after another to escape the Breeders' long reach. The Breeders control everything- the local war lords, the remaining factories, the fuel. They have unchecked power in this lawless society. And they're hunting Riley.

When the local Sheriff abducts the adult members of her family and hands her mother over to the Breeders, Riley and her eight-year-old brother, Ethan, hiding in a shelter, are left to starve. Then Clay arrives, the handsome gunslinger who seems determined to help to make up for past sins. The problem is Clay thinks Riley is a bender-- a genderless mutation, neither male nor female. As Riley's affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom?
The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico-- escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is shot and forced into the Breeder's hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she'll share unless she can find a way out.

The Believers
YA Dystopian
They’ve escaped the Breeders, yet their journey has just begun.

Riley and Clay are once again on the run from the Breeders. The group may have escaped the deranged experiments at the hospital, but as one of the world's last free women, Riley can never be safe. On the road back home, Riley and her crew are captured by a band of savage men. Their destination: the Citadel, run by a bizarre religious prophet named the Messiah. Somehow he knows their secrets. He wants them to join his group of Believers, but only if they’ll drink the baptismal water and swear allegiance.
The problem is there’s something wrong with the water. Something wrong with the people. And there’s human moaning coming from the bottom of a dark crevasse that no one wants to talk about. If they can’t figure out what’s going on, Riley and everyone she loves could become a Believer forever.

Take 10

Tell us about your most recent release.
My newest release is titled The Believers: The Breeders Book 2. It’s the sequel to my debut The Breeders. Here’s a little bit about the book.

Have you ever been in trouble with the police?
I’m a very timid rule-follower, so I fear the police as much as I used to fear my elementary school principal (tons). My last brush with police was when I was a teen, driving some of my cheerleader friends home from a basketball game and I ran a red light. I got pulled over while my friend was changing out of her uniform in the back of my car. You’d think a half-naked cheerleader would be enough to get me out of the ticket, but sadly no.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I’ve always wanted to be a back-up singer for some awesome artist. You’d get all the joy of meeting fun people and performing, but do not have to lose your freedom or worry about tabloids and paparazzi.

Who would play you in a film of your life?
Brad Pitt. It would be a really weird, concept movie.

Have you ever read or seen yourself as a character in a book or a movie?
All the time. Right now I’m pretty sure I’m Jessica Day from TV show The New Girl. But without the cute bangs. Man, I should really get some bangs.

What is the single most powerful challenge when it comes to writing novel?
Fighting the doubt. I’m starting my seventh novel and I kept thinking the doubt would get better. Instead, it has gotten worse. Now people are depending on me to finish a series and make it as good as the last book. I have an agent I don’t want to let down. I have money I’m depending on coming in from book sales. Doubt is bigger and uglier than ever. Good thing I have Kanye West-type self-esteem. Too bad I don’t have his sweet sunglasses.

Do you laugh at your own jokes?
Totally. Doesn’t everyone? I also sing to myself in the super market. I’m pretty sure I’m cool to be around.

How do you feel about being interviewed?
It makes me super awkward and causes me to tell bad jokes.

If you could travel to the past in a time machine, what advice would you give to the 6-year-old you?
The nerdy coke-bottle glasses are not permanent. Neither is the awful perm you get in 6th grade. Stay away from cute boys with great hair and fast cars. Trust your parents. They seem crazy, but they really know everything.
